Items Noted Elsewhere: WHS Class of WTF

bookmark
  • WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL TWO RIVERS WI CLASS OF 1989 - Uh, wow.  Some guy (?) who graduated the year before I entered Washington High School in Two Rivers has put together a completely obsessive-compulsive blog about his classmates and teachers, and seems intent on writing something about everyone he went to school with or was ever taught by.  Currently he has over 250 student-related posts, and over 60 teacher-related posts.  Holy crap.

Journal for 14 Jan 2007: To-Do Lists

bookmark

So, in review, last week kicked my ass.  Unfortunately, this week looks poised to do the same.  Two big projects need to get wrapped up at work, relatives will be passing through from out of state, and, as of this morning, it appears there will be family (read: parents) stuff to deal with.

The spring semester at Carlson starts next week, so anything I don’t get done at home this week may be sticking for a while.  No pressure.

Items Noted Elsewhere: Bright Lights in the Office

bookmark

Today on Ask MetaFilter:  “My cube is as bright as an operating room. Help me save my eyesight and sanity.

The most common answer?  Unscrew some of the bulbs.

Right.

Journal for 6 Jan 2008: Lights Out

bookmark

Even by Mark standards, my screw up at work late Friday was a big one. Our department was changing floors, and I was moving into my new office. One of my coworkers dropped by and asked me how I liked it, to which I responded with a rambling diatribe on the excessively bright lighting.

“Well,” he asked,”why don’t you just unscrew some of the lights?”

They were new fixtures. “I’m not sure how to open those up.”

“I think you just pull on them and they pop open.”

“Huh.” I climbed on top of my desk and pulled on the cover. It popped off quite easily, and the room went from bright to blinding. The bulb assembly was fairly complex, though, and I wasn’t about to attempt unscrewing anything. “Okay, that needs to go back on.” I tried hooking the cover back on, but with no luck. “Maybe I just have to push on it and it will click in.” I pushed up, and then…

There were sparks everywhere.

Followed by the lights over 60+ cubes going black.

“Oh fuck.”

Followed by laughing from my coworker. “Oh my god, that’s so awesome.”

I was pretty upfront with my boss about what happened, and am not expecting much in the way of official repercussions, but I still expect to get a lot of crap about it tomorrow.  Stories like this one don’t disappear easily.

Here comes Monday.

Journal for 1 Jan 2008: 2007 in Review

bookmark

Truth be told, 2007 kind of sucked. Sure, there were a number of great points, but for each one it seemed there were two or three days or events to more than compensate for them. (Lisa has her own list on her blog.) The great:

  • Mathias

The good:

  • Getting accepted to Carlson

The bad:

  • Kelly
  • Baba
  • Selling the condo
  • Losing a lot of money on the condo
  • The train wreck of a move from the condo to the apartment
  • Lisa’s trip to the emergency room
  • The five-day migraine
  • My camera failing the one time in my life the journalist in me really, really, really wanted it to work
  • Turkey Party 2007

And I’m not even going to touch on a bunch of crap that went down with my family, even though it turned into a huge black mark on Mathias’ first Christmas.

So, 2007, goodbye, and thank you for the good that you gave us. As much of a challenge as it may be, we’ll try to forget the rest.

~ ~ ~

Lisa and I rang in the New Year by watching a taped Dick Clark on ABC. About five minutes after midnight, we heard a lively countdown and celebration from one of the neighboring apartments. Uptown has a surprising number of time zones, and many of them aparently continue to be fueled by alcohol.
